PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES 1 – NEW YORK METS 7
The strong rivals met at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to play their first game of this week’s three game series. The Phillies came into this game, riding high off their winning series against the Houston Astros this past weekend.
David Wright tied a career best with four hits and Chris Young, who pitched amazingly well, became the first Mets pitcher with hits in an inning. He fueled a six-run rally and led his team to victory against their fans’ least favorite team.
After his leadoff single in the third inning, Jose Reyes bunted for a hit and Angel Pagan walked to load the bases. Wright then followed with a two-run single, he also stole second after Beltran struck out. During this play, a passed ball by Carlos Ruiz allowed Pagan to score. Ike Davis and Brad Emaus contributed with RBI singles.
On the pitching end, Young struck out seven in five and a third innings. This was his first start since joining New York, and after this performance, I’m sure he’ll see many more.
Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels suffered through a terrible game, it was actually the second-worst start of his career. He allowed six runs and seven hits in two and two-third innings. He hadn’t seen a game that terrible since his rookie year when he allowed nine runs in two innings against the Chicago Cubs.
He was the 2008 World Series MVP, but he wasn’t playing that way tonight.
In an exciting moment, a fan wearing an orange hat ran onto the field and slid headfirst into second base during the middle of the ninth inning. Any Mets fan would have wanted to do the same.
